Well, you need to remember that on the PC, you would simply use
a 256-color screen (standard VGA) and then you can "split" this up
any way you see fit. You could limit yourself to 16 colors in the main
area and 4 in the status area, but you could also do something like a
224 + 32 color split, etc. The 256-color screen would be no slower
